Sri Lanka Government Websites

By Nilooka Dissanayake
Today let us go in search of the websites of the Government of Sri Lanka. The following links should help you to find almost all the official Government websites.

Sri Lanka Government Websites

[www.gov.lk] and [www.gov.lk]

The first website provides information of the Government of Sri Lanka with links to the Presidential Secretariat, Prime Ministerís Office, Ministries, Provincial Councils and Local Government. You can also access Public Administration Circulars and the Government Gazette at this site together with a lot of other useful links providing information on Sri Lanka.

The second site also provides you with an overview of the Governmentís structure, its history and evolution, and its current programs and activities. Here also you will find online documentation of many of the Governmentís policy initiatives, links to all other Governmental and related Non-Governmental organisations, as well as access to an archive of news that you may search.

The Government Links in this website are quite comprehensive. These can be found at: www.priu.gov.lk/Gov_Links.html

President of Sri Lanka

[www.priu.gov.lk/execpres/Indexep.html] and [www.presidentorg]

While you can get some details about the Executive Presidency, the Constitution, the Presidential Secretariat, the Presidentís Fund, former Presidents, President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and speeches of President Kumaratunga, in the priu.gov.lk, I also recommend a visit to www.presidentsl.org

At this site, there are pages touching on the presidentís education, early political life and ascension to the Presidency. There is a photo gallery and a selection of photos from the Presidentís album.

There are also sections for Speeches of the President, news, and press releases, Peace Chronology, the Executive Presidency, the Presidential Secretariat and Sri Lanka.

Prime Minister of Sri Lanka

The above page provides you access to many links for the Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka including his bio data, messages, statements and speeches.

You can also access the Agreement on a ceasefire between the Government and the LTTE at this site.

Sri Lanka Parliament

This is a very interesting website that helps you learn about the Parliament of Sri Lanka, itís history, Parliamentary traditions and the Constitution. The Budget Proposals and Legislative enactments are also given in this site. Donít forget to visit the Business of Parliament, Mr. Speaker and Secretariat sections and understand how Parliament works and responsibilities of key functionaries.

Ministers & Ministries

Despite the name, the page given above provides a complete list of Cabinet Ministers as well as Non Cabinet Ranking Ministers as well a Deputy Ministers together with links to the relevant websites or web pages.

In those pages, the postal and street addresses of the Ministries and telephone and fax numbers are also given together with names and contact details of the Ministry Secretaries. The emails however are not given for most of the Ministries.

The Ministry pages also list the Departments and Statutory Institutions as well as the functions of each Ministry. Where the Departments and Statutory institutions are also having a website, the links are provided.

Ministries & Ministry Secretaries

This page lists the names of Ministries in alphabetical order, which is not such a bad idea considering the large number of Ministries.

Names of Ministry Secretaries are listed at www.gov.lk/secrataries.htm. This page, unfortunately stops short of listing the names of the Secretaries and provides no links to details.

Provincial Councils

This page at the www.priu.gov.lk provides an introduction to the Provincial Council system with constitutional details. There are also maps for visual guidance to Provinces together with the districts that belong to each province. The site also lists the names of Council Governors, Chief Ministers and Chief Secretaries.

Peace Process of Sri Lanka

This is the official website of the Sri Lanka governmentís Secretariat for Coordinating the Peace Process (SCOPP).

If you are unable to locate the sites for any particular government agency, let us know. This promise is only valid if you cannot find the site in one of the above web pages.
