Presidential Commission to probe SJVP campus violence

A three-member commission of inquiry chaired by Dr. Ranjith Bandara Ranaraja, a retired judge of the Court of Appeal, who serves as the Parliamentary Commissioner for Administration, has been appointed by President Chandrika Kumaratunga to inquire and report on the recent incidents of violence at the Sri Jayawardenapura university.

The other two members of the commission are Prof. Lakshman Jayatillake and Dayachandra Yasasiri Liyanage. The commission is expected to submit its report to the president within one month.

The commission has been mandated to identify the causes for all the incidents of violence at the university on September 24, and the persons/factions/organisations or any other forces responsible.

The commission will, inter alia, also examine what action has been taken prior, and at the moment of the incidents by the incumbent Vice Chancellor (VC) to maintain and restore order and also ascertain whether the VC had consulted the relevant authorities adequately as warranted, the presidential secretariat said.
