Tyronne candidate for UNís top post
The Cabinet last week approved Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernandoís candidacy for the Post of the UN Secretary General which will fall vacant in 2007 when the present incumbent Kofi Annanís term ends. The proposal was made by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Minister Fernando who is an Oxford Educated Barrister has served the country for the past 26 years as a member of parliament, and also as Deputy Foreign Minister for 9 years.
Meanwhile, Minister Fernando is expected to take over the Chairmanship of the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IOR-ARC) at the IOR-ARC Foreign Ministerís meeting in Colombo today. The Association consists of 20 countries whose shores are lapped by the Indian Ocean including India, Australia, Iran, Indonesia, Oman, South Africa and several dialogue partners including China, Japan, UK and France.
