Lebanon will not bar Lankans

Lebanon will continue to issue visas to Sri Lankans, a Labour Ministry spokesperson said yesterday.

This follows Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe swift intervention after Lebanon decided not to issue visas to Lankans subsequent to an investigation. An inquiry conducted by Lebanese authorities has revealed that at least two Sri Lankan embassy officials based there were involved in cheating. They have been accused of demanding bribes and misappropriating money over a period of time.

The sources said that Samarasinghe has directed Sri Lanka’s ambassador in Lebanon M.I.M.Musheen to hold talks with Lebanese authorities. Subsequently, they have agreed to issue visas to Lankans, the sources said.
