Mighty Mini’s show of might The Mighty Mini Club of Sri Lanka conducted an event at the Pannala International Race track on 25th October 2003. Known as the McFoil Mighty Mini Members Day race, the participation at the event was restricted to members of the Mighty Mini Club. A record number of fifty five Minis raced in this event. There were two broad categories of racing one was for amateurs and the other for "professionals". The amateurs consisted drivers who had never before participated in a motor racing event. The professionals were those who had previous racing experience. In the amateur events cars were individually timed whereas the experienced drivers had "mass start" racing. The event was meticulously planned by the enthusiastic group consisting the committee of the Mighty Mini Club headed by Honorary President David Todd.
The Mighty Mini Club has over 140 members. As old abandoned Minis are being restored and put back in to use, the membership of the Club increases. Further, the New Mini owners too are accepted as members. Worldwide, the Mini has achieved cult status, and there are a growing number of collectors, enthusiasts and Mini racing drivers. It is indeed an achievement that well over 40 years after the first Minis hit the roads, and decades after cars of the same vintage have gone off the roads, the Mini is still being raced extremely successfully in racing tracks world wide. It is also noteworthy that most racing Minis retain the basic components such as engine and gearbox which are common even to the earliest cars made over 40 years ago.
