Rain halts cricket final by Hafiz Marikar in Kandy Kandy Cricket Club and Old Rajans Sports Club emerged as joint champions at the Kandy District Cricket Association six-a-side cricket tournament. A well-organized tournament had to be halted, without the final being played due to bad weather. Mobitel came in as sponsors. In the early days this tournament was played in memory of Dr. J. C. Blok, one time committee member of the Central Province Cricket Association. On Saturday, the Asgiriya Stadium was packed with cricket fans and they enjoyed the matches up to the semi-finals. On the way to the finals Kandy Cricket Club beat Madawela United SC by 17 runs. Kandy CC 54 for 3 in 4 overs (Daminda Kolugola 18), Madawela United SC 37 for 2 in 4 overs (M. Nilfar 17). In the other semi-final Old Rajans SC beat University RC by 3 wickets. (University RC 28 for 4 in 4 overs) — (Old Rajans SC 29 for 1 in 3 overs — S. Daluwatte 14 n.o.) In the preliminary round matches, Madawela U.S.C. beat Visuvious SC by 6 runs, Old Rajans SC beat Tobacco RC by 5 wickets, Saracens CC beat Commercial Bank RC 4 wickets, Old Antonians SC beat Galagedera SC by 30 runs, Kandy CC beat Police SAC by 43 runs, Kandy Youth SC beat Prisons SC by 4 wickets, University RC beat Old Trinitians SC by 5 wickets. Madawela USC beat Saracens CC by 5 wickets, Old Rajans SC beat Old Antonians SC by 5 wickets, University RC beat Sylvestine CC by 22 runs, Kandy CC beat Kandy Youth SC by 10 runs. Diaz leads Old Anthonians, Wattala Emil Diaz will lead the Past Cricketers of St. Anthony’s College, Wattala against the present College Cricket Team to be played on Saturday 8 November at the college grounds, Wattala at 9.30 am. Past Anthonians team to be selected from the following: Emil Diaz, Roshan Iddmalgoda, Priyantha Munasinghe, Elvis Koelmeyer, Terry Don Paul, Niranjan Vaas, Manoj Hemaratne, Ruwan Aloka, Dilipa Liyanage, Lalith Wijeysiri, Denzil Anthony, Suresh Amerasekera, R. Guruswamy, Chandana Liyanage and Niron Herft. Present school team to be selected from: Ranil Shan, Vinod Kumar, Reginold Fernando, Gehan Mahanama, Sanjeewa Durairaj, Shehan Aravinda, Kasun Hinguruduwa, Asanka Nanayakkara, Tisara Perera, Denver Asker, Pashan Promod, Shihan Mathew, Prabath Aravinda, Shamith Kularatne, Shane Algama, Iftikar Perera, Manoj Chathuranga, Shiraj Nilan, Asanka Malinda and Roshan Gunavijaya. Cricket materials will be donated by the Past Cricketers to the college on that date. |
