Police sportsman SSP Nimal Abeysinghe to retire

Nimal Abeysinghe, SSP, Director, Police Communications Division, will be retiring shortly after 37 years of service in the department.

He joined the Police in 1967, as a Probationary SI.

A product of St. Anneís College-Kurunegala, he captained the college in basketball and soccer. He is a "Double International" having representated the Sri Lanka National Soccer Team from 1962 to 1965. He has also represented the Sri Lanka Rugby Team against visiting teams from Australia. He was also selected for the "All Star National" basketball pool. He is the only "Double International" to be produced by the NWP.

Nimal represented the Police rugby team from 1968 to 1975 and played a very prominent role when they won the Clifford Cup in 1972. He was a fly-half, a fine place kicker and a tackle. He also represented the Sri Lanka National Soccer Team and toured India, Pakistan, Thailand and Malaysia with it. He was rated by the then Sri Lanka Coach the late Maurice King, a British Soccer Coach as one of the best goal keepers in the country.

Nimal also represented the Police teams in Soccer from 1967 to 1973, Rugger team from 1968 to 1975 and the basketball team from 1967 to 1975.

While in the force, he served in the Field Force Headquarters, Depot Police, Chilaw, Nugegoda, Police Headquarters and the Police Welfare Division. He also served as the Director, Police Sports Division and is presently serving as the Director of the Police Communications Division. He has also served in the Presidential Security Division and the Prime Ministerís Security Division.
