Balagalla’s request turned down

A request by retiring Army Commander, Lt. Gen. Lionel Balagalle, to permit him six more weeks in his position to enable him to complete four years as Army Commander has been denied, well informed sources said yesterday.

The appointment of Army Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Shantha Kottegoda as the new commander was gazetted on Friday night on the instructions of the Presidential Secretariat, the sources said.

Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar who was in Moscow as a guest of the Russian Government with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov last week. The two Ministers announced that their talks, which covered a range of measures to strengthen bilateral ties, including trade, were fruitful.
