Accused of human smuggling racket
Red Cross launches probe

The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society is in the process of investigating a claim that it is involved in an organised human smuggling racket. The SLRCS had been accused of smuggling a group of Sri Lankans to South Korea on the pretext of sending a delegation of SLRCS volunteers.

"...we are in no way involved in sending so called volunteers To South Korea," SLRCS President Jagath Abeysinghe said.

"No sooner we learnt of this from the Korean Red Cross we promptly informed the Social Services Ministry and other relevant authorities of our position," he said.

He said an independent investigation was in progress with the former Colombo GA Sanath Weerakoon as the investigation officer.
