Door made of silver and gold to replace centuries old door

The centuries old door of the entrance to the Inner Shrine Room, the abode of the Sacred Tooth Relic is to be replaced with a door made of gold and silver.

The door is a gift from Deshabandu S. D. Gunadasa, Chairman of the Dasa Group of Companies and Mrs. Gunadasa.

The door will cost at least Rs. 6 million, Gunadasa said adding that the door is made of fifty-five (55) kilograms of silver and one (1) kilogram of gold.

It is made and gifted on the advice of the Mahanayake Theros of Malwatte and Asgiriya and the lay-custodian of the Tooth Relic Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijeyeratne.

The offering of the new door will take place at 6.30 p.m. on July 17.

Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijeyeratne told the media present that this was the first door replaced that was originally fixed by the rulers who built the Sri Dalada Maligawa centuries ago and conserved from time to time.

The door is being completed by a team of Kandyan traditional craftsmen.

The Mahanayake Theros, the Diyawadana Nilame and some ministers are expected to be present at the time of offering of the new door.
