Weragoda to be new UNP secy
Former cabinet secretary N.Y.K.K. Weragoda is likely to be the UNP’s new general secretary with his name agreed on at a meeting of the party’s political affairs committee last week.
Party sources said the name must now be ratified by the working committee but this is considered a formality as nominees for senior positions are normally proposed by the party leader.
Mr. Milroy Perera who succeeded Mr. Senarath Kapukotuwa as UNP general secretary after the last elections will revert to his former position as one of the UNP’s four vice chairmen with Messrs. M.H. Mohamed, D.M. Swaminathan and Daya Pelpola.
Weragoda held several senior public service appointments including ministry secretary and retired as secretary to the cabinet.
Wickremesinghe has also named former party chairman N.G.P. Panditharatne to head a group to seek wide ranging opinion on revamping and restructuring the party from the grassroots.
They will analyse proposals that are made beginning later this month and a core group from the political affairs committee will help in shaping the final format of the proposed revamping, party sources said.
Already a preliminary report from a committee headed by Mr. Sajith Premadasa is in. (FRS)
