Haris Omar weds

by Hafiz Marikar in Kandy

Haris Omar, the former Trinity College, Kandy Sports Club, Central Province and Sri Lanka under 19, 21 and Sri Lanka skipper will enter into the bonds of holy matrimony, to Rasha Yusuf, today, at the Galle Face Hotel, Colombo.

Haris Omar, is one of the finest ruggerites to come out of Trinity College in the last decade. He started as scrum half for Trinity in the under 17 side, where he was coached by Janaka Kiridene and Lohan Ratwatte. While playing under 17, he was called to do duty for the senior side and played as a flanker and ended up as a top class number eight.

He led the school in 1995, and won the Bradby. Haris also had the privilege of captaining the Sri Lanka Under 19 and Under 21 teams.

Soon after his school rugby career, he played for Kandy Sports Club and led the side in 1999, and became the youngest captain. It was the first time that a father and son captained Kandy SC. (Isphan captained in 1975 and the son after 24 years.)

It was Haris who led Kandy SC to win the Inter-Club Sevens for the first time.

Haris led Sri Lanka at the Asian Games. He hung up his boots when he was pretty young.

Today, he is an excellent rugby commentator and was also a one time columnist for the Sunday Island.

His partner Rasha, had her schooling in Riyad.
