Govt. – UNF clash on imports

Gampaha District JVP MP Siripala Amarasinghe Tuesday said the government was not following 'the destructive import policy of the UNP' which had expended the foreign reserves on the import of vehicles for private use and also sold off the nation’s assets.

Speaking in Parliament, after Minister of Trade Jeyaraj Fernandopulle presented the amendments to the regulations under the Imports and Exports (Control) Act, he said the government would introduce a budget that would not look after a few, but would use the available resources to purchase tractors, machinery and equipment required to strengthen the national production.

Kurunegala District UNP Parliamentarian and former Minister Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, questioned the government on the import of rice. He said he wished to know whether the imports were corruption free and made by the government or the Markfed which was only a nameboard. He said rice could have been imported through the private sector at a lower cost.

Kegalle District UPFA parliamentarian H. R. Mithrapala it was the SLFP government of 1970 -77 which introduced the self-sufficiency programme which was aimed at increasing local production of food and the development of the local industries.
