BANGALORE,
India, Oct 7 (Reuters) - Debutant Michael Clarke made a
sparkling 151 and captain Adam Gilchrist 104 to lift Australia
to 474 all out on the second day of the first test against India
on Thursday.
The 23-year-old Clarke, who came to the crease
with his team in trouble at 149 for four, was the eighth man out
as Australia added 51 for their last four wickets after resuming
in the afternoon session on 423 for six.
Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh picked up four more
wickets to complete figures of five for 146.
Clarke, on 111 at lunch, was dismissed
immediately after reaching his 150, edging a wide ball from
left-arm seamer Zaheer Khan to wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel.
He faced 249 balls and hit 18 fours and four
sixes.
Gilchrist, who completed his 11th test hundred,
was out on the stroke of lunch by Harbhajan after hitting 13
fours and three sixes from 109 deliveries.
Clarke and Gilchrist added 167 runs for the
sixth wicket to lay an excellent platform for the tourists to
put pressure on the hosts on a dry, slow pitch.
Leg-spinner Anil Kumble claimed figures of three
157.
