Sri Lanka ‘A’ skipper Jehan Mubarak will lead
the country in the annual Hong Kong Cricket Sixes on November 6
and 7 at the Kowloon Cricket Club, Hong Kong. A strong team of
seven players, with all-round abilities, who excelled in
domestic competitions, have been picked for the two-day event.
This will be the 10th edition of the tournament inaugurated in
1992 and features all test playing nations apart from Kenya and
hosts, Hong Kong.
Gayan Wijekoon is the only ‘surviving’ member of
the Sri Lankan side that played the tournament last year. Indika
de Saram, Chinthaka Jayasinghe, Duleep Liyanage and Ravindra
Pushpakumara, key members of the side that played in the
tournament last year have been dropped in favour of new blood.
Rashan Peiris of Colts Cricket Club has been
picked as wicketkeeper. Included in the side are three players
who are members of the champion Twenty-20 Chilaw Marians team.
Although eight players took part in last year’s
competition, only seven have been named this time around and
it’s reliably learnt that Sri Lanka Cricket is trying to
accommodate a full time manager in the tour party for the two
day event at the expense of a player. Last year, Dulip Liyanage
did the dual role of coach cum manager. The efforts to include a
full time manager has denied the opportunity for another young
prospect.
Last year’s prize money was a fantastic 260,000
US Dollars.
