The Technical Advisor of the Sri Lanka Rugby
Football Union (SLRFU) George Simpkin who is expected to
accompany the national team on its forthcoming tour of Hong Kong
is likely to sever links with the rugby controlling body in
November, an informed source told ‘The Island’.
It is believed that Simpkin who has been with
the ruling body for rugby for two years has made up his mind to
seek greener pastures elsewhere after the team’s impeding
international assignment in Hong Kong.
"We have heard from certain reliable people that
he (Simpkin) is keen to finish his tenure in Sri Lanka and take
up a fresh appointment" the informed source said.
It is widely thought one of the main reasons for
Simpkin to leave his present post is the SLRFU’s inability to
remunerate him for services rendered thus far.
The present financial situation is so dire that
the New Zealander has decided to wind up and head to another
leading country in the Pacific Island.
The informed source said he would probably head
to Fiji to take up a development post following the completion
of the 12th Asian Championships in Hong Kong.
Simpkin has previously handled teams such as
China and Singapore before the SLRFU managed to rope him in as
its Technical Advisor.
He has also functioned as the Technical Advisor
of the national Sevens team but critics point out that overall
results of the team in international rugby under him has been so
unimpressive that his departure will not be a big loss to Sri
Lankan rugby.
A renowned rugby figure who did not wish to be
named even went to the extent of saying Simpkin’s exit will
prove to be a blessing in disguise instead of a set back for the
sport.
