LAHORE, Pakistan, Oct 6 (AFP) - Pakistan
outplayed India to win the revived Kirlosker Trophy golf
tournament in the eastern city of Lahore on Wednesday.
The Kirlosker Trophy tournament, on the format
of the Ryder Cup between the United States and Europe, was last
held in 1991 and was revived amidst a thaw in India-Pakistan
relations.
"It was a great occasion of golf revival and
winning the trophy is the icing on the cake," Pakistan’s
non-playing captain Zulfiqar Rana told AFP.
Pakistan made a clean sweep by winning five
matches in the foursome play on Monday while the sixth match was
tied as the home player Tariq Mahmood won all his matches.
"India have been progressing well in golf at
Asian and international level so our win is a big achievement,"
said Rana.
On day two Pakistan and India won three matches
each as India’s Vikrant Chopra and Jaydeep Parwardhan exhibited
their skill on the greens.
Pakistan outplayed their rivals by eight wins to
four in the individual two-ball play on Wednesday to emerge
winners by 16.5 to 7.5 points.
India are due to stage the event in 2005 but
have yet to finalise the venue.
Indian player Parwardhan was happy despite his
team’s defeat.
"Win or lose doesn’t matter but it was the
spirit with which the game was played and back home everyone is
happy that Pakistan and India have revived their golfing
relations," said Parwardhan.
Pakistan and India revived their sporting links
with a long awaited cricket series earlier this year. They also
revived a bilateral hockey series, the second leg of which is
currently being held in India.
