Two-day SAARC workshop begins in Islamabad

Islamabad, 30 November: A two-day SAARC workshop sponsored by the World Bank began in Islamabad on Monday with enhancing economic development in South Asia high on the agenda.

The delegates from SAARC countries have gathered to review the progress on the social charter, which was reached by all members in the SAARC summit in January this year.

The charter envisages poverty alleviation, economic growth, health and education development, uplift of the masses and population growth.

Minister of state for foreign affairs Khusro Bakhtiar said that Pakistan was fully committed to achieve the objectives of the saarc social charter.

Minister of state for economic affairs Hina Rabbani Khar said that sound and broad-based economic policies are being pursued for effective implementation of the SAARC social charter in Pakistan.

Delegates from the SAARC countries said the social charter was being implemented in letter and in spirit in their respective countries.

They called upon the lending agencies and civil societies to contribute towards realization of the charterís objectives. (Asian Tribune)-
