Chief of Defence Staff and Navy Commander Vice
Admiral Daya Sandagiri yesterday said the Sri Lanka Navy was
prepared to face "any eventuality". He added that LTTE leader
Velupillai Prabhakaran was an unpredictable character and the
Navy will not take any chances.
"The Sri Lanka Navy, in itís journey of 54
years, developed from a small scale force to a sizeable one and
has gone through difficult periods providing national security
and defending the countryís territorial integrity. It has played
a key role in this respect and as the commander I am proud of
it", Sandagiri said.
Vice Admiral Sanadagiri was addressing a
gathering of naval officers and the media after launching the
new web site of the Sri Lanka Navy - www.navy.lk - at a simple
ceremony at the navy head quarters. He said "It was a long felt
need for the Navy and now we can keep on par with the rest of
the world where information technology is concerned. It also
helps us to learn from other Navyís in the world". He expressed
his gratitude to the computer advisory committee, whose
dedication helped the navy achieve this success in a vital
aspect in information technology. The commander also emphasized
the need to keep abreast with the other navies in the region and
more regional co-operation.
The Navyís first website was launched in 1997,
but it was with private assistance and now it had its our own
website he said.
The ceremony was also attended by the Chief of
Staff of the Navy Rear Admiral Mohan Wijewickrama. Rear Admiral
Wasantha Karannagoda, Western Area Commander, Rear Admiral
Sarath Werasekara,Director General Operations, Rear Admiral
Harsha Mayadunne, Director General Logistics, Commodore Thisara
Samarasinghe,Acting Director General Services and Director Naval
Projects and Plans and Commodore Jayantha Perera, Director
Operations were also present .
