The Bank of Ceylon (BoC), the premier state owned bank in Sri
Lanka which undertook to construct a children’s ward complex at the Cancer
Hospital, Maharagama, handed over the second floor of the building at a simple
ceremony held last week.
The fully completed Bank of Ceylon Children’s Ward Complex was
constructed at a cost of Rs. 5 million through the contributions by the bank and
bank staff members.
The Cancer Hospital, Maharagama, the only government institute
in our country that treats cancer patients, welcomes the assistance and support
from the public to carry out its healthcare services efficiently and effectively.
The newly constructed children’s ward complex with the financial assistance from
the BoC will be of immense benefit, said its Medical Director Dr. Yasantha
Ariyaratne.
A paediatric complex was a long felt need at the hospital and
the donation made by the BOC is commendable. The new building could be utilised
for further enhancement of facilities being currently provided, he said. He
emphasised the fact that a separate and a modern building to houses child patients
is a plus point as it provide a better environment for a speedy recovery.
The hospital treats over 800 indoor patients at a given time
and a 10 percent of the total (80) are children. With the two storied building in
place, we are now able to install the equipment we received earlier as donations.
Our children’s ward is now geared to provide treatment in an improved environment,
Dr. Ariyaratne added.
