Last week’s floods and rain affected 182,165 families in 12
districts with Ampara District the worst hit by the floods. A count showed that
68,248 families displaced there. The Batticaloa District was the second in the
list with 63,000 families displaced and Vavunia District the third with 52,700
families, affected a press release from the Social Service and Women’s Empowerment
Ministry yesterday said.
The other districts hit by the floods were Badulla, Nuwara
Eliya, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Trincomalee, Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mulativu and
Mannar.
According to the latest reports 16,000 houses have been damaged
or destroyed in the floods while 52,000 acres of farm land, especially paddy crops
were destroyed by the floods.
The government has so far allocated 31.6 million rupees as
assistance to those affected and displaced by the floods, the release said.
