The Medical Research Institute yesterday re-confirmed that it is
not the dreaded SARG but an influenza type B virus that is causing the deadly flu
prevalent in the South.
The MRI has checked three more samples from the affected areas.
The Medical Officer of the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry, Dr. Hasitha
Tisera told `D2The Island`D3 yesterday that further cases or deaths by this
disease had not been reported from Southern or other parts of the country.
A group of the Medical Research Institute and Epidemiology unit
will today (23) visit Embilipitiya for further investigations.
Dr. K. I. Padmathilake, Director of the Matara General Hospital
said that all patients treated at the Matara hospital were discharged and no other
cases had been reported Dr. Padmathilake said.
