Two killed, mission aborted

by Norman Palihawadana

Two persons believed to be members of an underworld gang were killed at Nawagamuwa in a shoot out with the police yesterday (22). Police said the two men had been travelling in a van when they were signalled, by the police, to stop for a routine check.

But they had started shooting at the police who were then forced to return fire. The exchange of fire between the police and the two men had lasted nearly two hours but at the end Rizwan Buhary of Colombo 13, said to be a prominent member of an underworld gang and another person Sandaruwan Kumara of Pugoda had been killed.

Police said the two men could have been on their way to commit a crime at the time of the incident.

Police had found a revolver, a cellular phone and 7,000 rupees cash in the van. Police said the men had made a call to someone 15 minutes before the shoot out. Tracing the number of the telephone which received the call would provide a clue about the likely ‘job’ the two were on, police said.
