There is a pedestrian crossing opposite Wesley College in front
of the Magazine Prison along the Baseline Road, Colombo 08. School children often
cross the road while vehicles move. Several people have died on this spot.
As a solution to this I suggest that an underground pedestrian
crossing be built there.
At present people who get down at this stretch of the Baseline
cross the Baseline Road at different locations. The iron fence built on the centre
of the Baseline Road separating the two way traffic does not cover the whole of
Baseline road.
Therefore, people cross the road from different points. With
the construction of an underground pedestrian crossing coupled with an extended
fence right across the median to prevent jay walkers from darting across the road,
many more human lives will be saved and motorists will be relieved because of a
smooth flow of traffic.
