BASL to raise Rs. 80m for Tsunami relief

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka Hopes to raise more than Rs. 80 million from its membership for Tsunami relief. The fund will be utilised for relief not only of its affected membership but also for housing of victims.

"We are sure that you would be shocked and grieved to know that the following dear members of the Bar have lost their lives according to the information so far received," A press release by the BASL said among the dead were:

J. E. P. Deraniyagala, Presidentís counsel, his wife, Son-in-law and two grand children;

Tennyson Edirisuriya, Attorney-at-Law, Ms. Ajantha Wadugodapitiya, Attorney-at-law and Sujeewa Gnanaratne, Attorney-at-Law and his wife Manoji Premachandra, Attorney-at-Law and baby daughter.

The houses/properties and other belongings of the following members have also been lost.

Chandima Muthukumarana (Matara Bar), W. R. C. De Silva (Balapitiya Bar) and Ms. D. D. K. Piyasiri (Colombo).

"There are also other dear colleagues who are reported missing."

"We have a membership of more than 8000 and if each of these members could contribute a minimum of Rs. 1000 towards this cause, we would then have a substantial contribution for this worthy cause."
