Sri Lanka’s tea production last year at 308.1
million kg was up 1.6% over the previous year, the latest Sri
Lanka Tea Board figures reveal.
December production at 26.4 million kg was up
from 24.2 million kg a year earlier thanks to gains in both the
low grown and high grown categories.
As in previous years, the low growns contributed
over half the total tea production in 2004 with 183.9 million
kg, up from 167.7 million kg. Both high and mid growns performed
at levels lower than in the previous year but the low growns
better than caught up the lag.
The year also saw the production of 1.3 million
kg of green tea and 16.1 million kg of CTC teas, down slightly
from 17.6 million kg produced the previous year.
