THE CAT’S EYE up above at the Ceylon
Continental was the venue Devika and Gerry Nathanielsz picked on
for their wedding anniversary celebrations.
It was a lovely evening which brought together
many friends who have been with them through many a year, and
the opportunity for getting together after a lapse, due to the
calamity at the end of last year. None of the glamour associated
with such an event was missing and of course the women present
contributed in no small measure to this aspect. The saree was
the choice of many but their was a range of styles to turn it
into a cavalcade of fashion, and indicate whats in style for
2005.
Devika wore her saree of blue georgette
embroidered in a elaborate and beautiful border in gold with a
mingling of red and ivory in it, draped in the gujarati style,
with a sleeveless blouse and a necklace of diamonds with a blue
sapphire pendent on it, with stud earrings. A red saree in a
dashing combination was Padma Maharaja’s choice. The saree had a
wide border on it in black and in a ripple design in black with
white. On the pallu of the saree were circles of black with a
central motif within them. She wore a plain black blouse and a
gold collar necklace studded with red stones and pearls with
pearl earstuds and black accessories. Red and black also
combined in Nela de Zoysa’s saree. The black background was foil
to clusters of red flowers picked up with the sparkle of red
sequins. A black blouse and a mass of red beads made her
necklace, and her accessories were in red even upto a red fan.
The saree that Rose Pieris wore was very contemporary in the
design of the print. On a pale gold hued silk the print was in
black geometrics with the pallu in a red, olive green, and a
purple forming panels outlined in black. Her blouse was bare
shouldered except for shoe string straps and she wore a necklace
of pearls with ear-studs to match. The saree Shantha de Zoysa
wore was in a grey which had a woven border and coin dots
scattered all-over it in a shimmering silver. A single strand of
diamonds made her necklace. Favouring other forms of style
Gayathri Swaminathan opted for a chemise style dress in black
which had red piping in diagonals going up-wards on the top, and
downwards on the skirt. Around the armhole were rings in
alternate black and white, and she wore long silver earrings for
an ornament. A sheer black-top with a turtle neck and long
sleeves Tylene Nagendra wore over a bare shouldered black top
and beack pants, for sleek sophistication. The sheer top at the
midriff was worked in jet sequins. Black was also the choice of
Sobhodini Thambiayah. Her somewhat sheer high necked long top
she wore over a black pair of pants. The black top made the
perfect background to her triple strand gold necklace, she wore
with gold shoulder length earrings. It was indeed a welcome
sight to see Subho looking at her best. A long sleeveless top
which had a highneck was in an embossed white organza Dawn
Austin wore over a bare shouldered black top and black pants.
Satin pants in an aubergine tone Mersumi Andriesz wore also with
a high neck three quarter sleeved top in a lighter shade worked
in a tracery of silver across the front, long diamond earrings
completed the picture. Sheranee Sellamuttu opted for a stylised
salwar kameez outfit in a deep blue which had a wide border at
the hemline in a pale gold weave with mango motifs scattered on
the top. Her pendent had a large blue stone in the centre of
sunray like design. "Pearl" provided excellent music for dancing
which brought many other well dressed women on the floor, among
them Shanthi Jasenthuliyana, Needra Wickremasinghe, Nalini
Senanayake, Preeni Virasinghe, Sonia Wienman and Joan Fernando.
