Richmond-Mahinda centenary big match postponed

The 100th ‘Battle of the Lovers’ centenary cricket encounter between Richmond College and Mahinda College, Galle has been postponed due to the tsunami disaster. Fresh dates are yet to be decided upon, said the two college principals W.N.R.P Daniyas (Richmond) and Susil Premanath (Mahinda). Earlier, the match scheduled to played from March 10 to 12, (the first time it was to be played over three days).

When ‘The Island’ contacted the Principals yesterday,the newly appointed Mahinda Principal, Susil Premanath said, "we have received a circular from the Ministry of Education, to desist from playing the match in a carnival atmosphere." The Joint Old Boy’s Committee will meet and decide on the new dates.

The first ‘Battle of the Lovers’ was staged in 1905. Richmond and Mahinda College continue with their inter school matches subsequent to the tsumani disaster, with all matches being played outside Galle.
