SLMC expels dissident trio

by T.Chandrasekera

The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress has expelled its three dissident MPs who had accepted ministerial portfolios in the Alliance government. The SLMC High Command, which met on Thursday (23) night, decided to expel the MPs, Rishard Baidudeen (Wanni), Najeeb A. Majeed (Trincomalee), and M.S.S. Ameer Ali (Batticaloa), from the party, party sources said yesterday.

General Secretary of the Party, M. T. Hassen Ali said that the expulsion came into effect from Thursday night and added that he had informed the General Secretary of the United National Front, N. K. K. Weragoda to remove them from their Membership in Parliament.

However, Batticaloa District Development and Rehabilitation Minister Amir Ali said that he and the other two MPs will challenge SLMC High Command’s decision to expel them from the party in the courts.

He said that decision to expel them from the party was an example of the dictatorial role played its leader Rauff Hakim.

Trincomalee District Development and Rehabilitation Minister Najeeb A. Majeed said that SLMC’s decision has no effect on him since he is not a SLMC member.
