Finance Minister, Dr. Sarath Amunugama who test
drove the Ceylinco Reva appreciated the efforts of Ceylinco
Consolidated in bringing electric cars to Sri Lanka. Minister
Amunugama whilst assuring his fullest co-operation suggested to
Rohan Senanayake, Deputy Chairman of Ceylinco Maini (Pvt) Ltd,
Manura Ekanayake, Director Marketing and Shanta Yapa Chief
Operating Officer to make these eco-friendly cars available to
the general public soon.
Reva, the automatic city car is not available in
Sri Lanka as Ceylinco Reva. This two-door car, which does not
have an engine, is a high-tech car with two microprocessors
on-board. The power pack once fully charged does 80 Km
irrespective of traffic congestion. The car is silent even at
its top speed of 65 Km per hour and does not emit smoke.
In September 2004, Ceylinco Consolidated signed
an agreement with Maini Group of India to introduce these cars
to the local market and at the request of Deshamanya Dr. Lalith
Kotelawala the Indian company agreed to transfer technology to
manufacture these cars in Sri Lanka for both the domestic and
export markets. The joint venture company, Ceylinco Maini (Pvt)
Ltd intends to import cars initially and then to start local
Ceylinco Reva electric cars are available in
three models. The Classe has all the features available in a
modern car, which includes central locking, remote controlled
air conditioner, leather seats, interior decals matched to body
colors and anti-theft devise.
The Ceylinco Reva is built on a space frame,
which cocoons passengers in case of a collision. Its body is
made out of ABS which is dent proof. The car has a very low
centre of gravity that makes it highly maneuverable and very
stable when negotiating curves. Yet, it has a high ground
elearance and looks very attractive with its 13" alloy wheels.
The car has a regenerative braking device controlled
electronically to assist its hydraulic service brakes.
Ceylinco Reva comes in an array of attractive
colors. The high seating position makes the car very comfortable
to drive. The instrument cluster has an indicator, which is
similar to the fuel gauge in a conventional car to show the user
the state of charge of the power pack. Ceylinco Maini (Pvt) Ltd
