A younger brother of a former Secretary of the
Bar Association had been attacked by a colleague at the OPA
restaurant over the weekend.
The soft spoken victim had been elected to the
executive body of the Sri Lanka Bar Association earlier in the
day, at the first meeting of the Bar Council.
The ‘targeted’ lawyer had contested successfully
as an independent candidate. Subsequently, the Colombo Law
Society had invited the outstation delegates for lunch at the
OPA restaurant. A lawyer who had held a government appointment
during the previous administration had got into an altercation
with the victim over his election to the executive body.
During the argument, the newly elected executive
committee member had been attacked. Well informed sources said
that the victim had campaigned for the former BASL President
Ikram Mohammed.
But that didn’t prevent him from successfully
contesting the executive body as an independent. ‘Obviously some
people didn’t like it,’ the sources said. He was attacked for
having backed the wrong horse.
Several doctors, accountants, engineers and
other professionals saw their colleagues in a different
profession throwing cheap jibes at the opponents and arguing
with them, in an uncouth manner, and as usual the argument ended
up in fisticuffs, the sources said.
