Strike threat leads to panic buying

Long queues formed at gasoline stations across the country yesterday as vehicle owners feared a fuel shortage resulting from a threatened strike in the energy sector.

The strike threats came over the government's moves to restructure the sector through the sale of its stake in the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation and the Ceylon Electricity Board.

The mad scramble to beat the strike and fill tanks caused traffic jams on many roads.
