Star Trading Company, has sued Itochu
Corporation for Rs 87 million, alleging non supply of 30,000
metric tons of urea fertilizer.
The Plaintiff, Star Trading Company, Colombo in
its plaint instituted in the Colombo High Court, said that the
urea shortage in Sri Lanka in 2003, resulted in fertlizer prices
sky rocketing.
The defendant Itochu Corporation, took up the
position that the Court did not have jurisdiction since it
maintains only a liaison office in Colombo.
Summons it maintained should be served at its
head office in Japan.
However, the Colombo High Court overuled the
objection saying it has jurisdiction and Itochu Corporation
should be prepared for trial in May 2005. (ZJ)
