Opens new branch at Dhanmondi - Dhaka
Commercial Bank strengthens presence in Bangladesh

The Commercial Bank of Ceylon has extended its reach in Bangladesh with the opening of a branch at the Bangladesh Export Processing Zone Authority (BEPZA) complex in Dhanmondi, a main commercial hub of Dhaka.

The Dhanmondi branch will be linked to the rest of the Commercial Bank network of branches and booths in Motijheel, Chittagong, Gulshan and Sonargaon. It will also be equipped with ATMs enabling customers to operate their accounts from anywhere irrespective of where their accounts are held.

Speaking at the occasion Managing Director of Commercial Bank Amitha Gooneratne said that opening a branch in Dhanmondi was another step in the overall plan of Commercial Bank to establish a strong presence in Bangladesh.

"When we acquired the operations of Credit Agricole Indosuez in 2003 we said that it was only a beginning. Since then we have upgraded the facilities for customers as well as the staff. We introduced the latest banking technology relying entirely on Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi expertise," he added.

He assured that Commercial Bank would continue to offer the same high standards of ethics and good governance it is reputed for and thereby contribute to the integrity of the private banking sector of Bangladesh.

Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner in Bangladesh Gamini Munasinghe said that he was extremely happy to see the rapid progress made by Commercial Bank subsequent to their entry to Bangladesh through the acquisition of the French Bank Credit Agricole Indosuez. "I am confident that Commercial Bank would contribute positively towards developing much stronger business ties between the two countries and also contribute to the overall banking sector of Bangladesh through its superior brand of banking," he said.

Executive Chairman BEPZA Mohammed Zakir Hossian addressing the gathering said that BEPZA welcomed the opportunity of working together with Commercial Bank to serve the investors and the people of Dhanmondi. He also said that he was confident that investors would find the services offered by Commercial Bank extremely useful.

The Commercial Bank’s Bangladesh branch was adjudged the ‘Best Foreign Bank’ at ‘The Industry Business Awards 2004’, held recently in Bangladesh. The award was presented to Commercial Bank for its outstanding performance in providing banking services as well as the contribution made to the country’s economy. The Industry Business Awards are organized by the Bangladesh Weekly Industry Magazine.
