Devika breaks a 31-year record

Devika Gunathilaka of Bishop’s College, Colombo erased a 31-year record to win the Girls 200m Free Style Under-15 event on the second day of the 32nd Sri Lanka Schools’ Swimming and Diving Championships held at Sugathadasa Swimming Pool on Friday.

Gunathilaka timed 2 minutes 22:11 seconds to establish the new record. The former record of 2:27:00 seconds was set up by R. Ranasinghe of St. Bridget’s College in 1974. Imara Fahim (EMS), who finished second, timed 2:23:38 seconds and Pravini Kuruppu (LIS) finished third.

Meanwhile, Sunethra Wijerathna of Mahamaya College, Kandy, who registered a new meet record on the first day in Under-11 100m backstroke event, continued her record breaking streak yesterday as she timed 2:58:88 seconds to win the Under-11 4x50 Individual Medley event establishing yet another new record. She finished 15 seconds earlier than Harshani Dissanayake of Hillwood Colleg, Kandy who came second.

In the first girls Under-19 event held yesterday, Tehani Renganathan of Bishop’s College had a keen tussle with Shanika Wimalanatha in the last 20 metres of the 200 m freestyle before recording victory.

In the Under-17 200m freestyle event, Apeksha Wijesooriya of Musaeus College set up a new record to win the event. She erased the previous record by T. Ratnesekara set up in 1999.

Earlier in the day, M. Hulangamuwa of Trinity College, Kandy registered a new meet record in Under-09 4x50 Individual Medley. He recorded 3:06:98 seconds to finish the event.
