SC rules presidential poll in 2005

A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court yesterday ruled that the next presidential poll should be held in 2005 and directed the Elections Commissioner to take steps on that basis to conduct the poll for the election of the president, in terms of Article 31(3) and the applicable law.

  • Ruling ends suspense
    Chamber 502 of the Supreme Court was literally bursting at the seams yesterday as an army of lawyers and visitors thronged inside to hear the ruling on the date of the presidential election.
    So heavy were the crowds that the room was eventually locked from inside and a row of no-nonsense security guards deployed across its entrance. Outside, a mass of journalists paced restlessly. The corridors were also teeming with lawyers who stood in bunches and talked in low murmurs.

  • Thugs attack Ruhunu U’grads, 31 warded
    Thirty one (31) undergraduates, including two female students, of the Ruhuna University, were hospitalised following a mini battle between two rival student groups in the wee hours of yesterday.
    "More than 60 Science union undergraduates assaulted the members of Students Council around 1.00 a.m. yesterday. They were supported by outsiders who carried fire arms. They fired into the sky and cornered all student council members into the Gym before assaulting them with clubs," Convenor of the Inter University Students Federation, Duminda Nagamuwa told The Island.

    Trade deficit widens by 7% to US$ 1,211 mn in 1H 2005

    The Central Bank (CB) said in its external trade performance that growth momentum of exports continued in June 2005. Exports grew by 12.1 per cent to US dollars 514 million in June 2005 from US dollars 459 million recorded in June 2004. Exports earnings during the first half of 2005 grew by 11.5 per cent to US dollars 2,906 million. 
     

  • Singer turnover grows 29.4% to Rs.5.3 bn in 1H 2005
    Singer Sri Lanka reached a new half yearly high turnover of Rs 5.3 Billion in 2005 recording a significant growth rate of 29.4% over the same period last year.
    All channels of distribution gained sales over the industry norm during this period, Singer reported. Growth was particularly seen in the Singer Mega Channel, the traditional Retail and Wholesale Channels and in the Modern Homes network
