Police investigations into the assassination of
Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar have revealed that the
minister relaxed his security after an assurance given to him by
a millionaire businessman closely connected to the LTTE.
The businessman Gnanakoon had assured Mr.
Kadirgamar that he would not be harmed as long as the Ceasefire
Agreement lasted.
He was seen moving with nearly twenty bodyguards
last week when the Green Movement carried out a non-violent
protest against India’s Sethusamudram project.
He and other pro-LTTE groups had tried to make
the campaign an anti-Indian protest while the organizers clearly
stated their protest would be only against the Sethusamudram and
not against India.
Some other groups backed by the LTTE had tried
to say that India was carrying the project against the Tamils of
Sri Lanka.
However, the organizers have rejected their
claims.
Gnanakoon, who came with his bodyguards in two
luxury dual purpose vehicles, had earlier offered to fund the
protest activities.
A senior activist said they had turned it down
due to what they termed dubious background.
