Police said that so far none of those
responsible for the bloody clashes at the Ruhuna University’s
Wellamadama Campus were arrested. Thirty two undergraduates
including two female were injured in the clashes that erupted on
the wee hours of Friday.
Students Council members alleged more
than 60 undergraduates of the Science Faculty had escorted
outsiders armed with fire arms into the university premises and
assaulted them at gun point.
Some had fired in the sky.
HQI, Matara police Shirley Gunasena
told The Island yesterday that they could not arrest any of the
suspects due to lack of evidence. He said the apprehension of
the attackers is not possible due to incomplete eye witnesses’
accounts.
The undergraduates currently warded in
the Matara General Hospital could not provide information
leading to an arrest. The university security officials too had
not been able to provide any substantiate information to
identify the culprits.
"So, the investigations are
continuing, and we have deployed a large number of police
officers to investigate," HQI Gunasena said.
Convener of the Inter University
Students’ Federation Duminda Nagamuwa alleged a UNP mediaman
turned politician in the South had assisted the attackers. "The
university administration had failed to provide security to
students. Our comrades were attacked at gun point inside the
university premises. Now the police cannot arrest the culprits
who are henchmen of a UNP politico," he said.
He added the conditions of two warded
students are serious and two of them had to undergo surgeries.
Director of the Matara General
Hospital Dr. K. I. Padmathilaka said all students have been
discharged after the treatment. "The last patient was discharged
on Saturday," Dr. Padmathilaka said.
Acting Vice Chancellor of the Ruhuna
University Professor K. D. N. Weerasinghe, said a committee
chaired by Professor Moli de Silva has been appointed to conduct
an internal investigation into the clashes. He too said that so
far no strong evidence received to establish the identity of the
attackers.
"Further to Prof. Silva committee, the
administration had appointed another committee comprising Arts,
Science and Management faculty deans and Students Service
Director to make recommendations to prevent further clashes and
a repetition of such incidents in future," he said.
