Chetan Anand of India and Sujitra Ekmongkopaisar
of Thailand emerged men’s and women’s singles champions at the
Sri Lanka Satellite Badminton Championships which ended at the
Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium yesterday.
Anand, who is ranked 66 in the world, was the
favourite to win the title. He proved his class by defeating
Malaysian Yew Thein Law in two straight sets 15-10 and 15-4.
Two Thais met in the women’s final. Monthila
Meemak, who boats of a world ranking of 33 was hot favourite to
clinch the title. But her compatriot Sujitra Ekmongkopaisar
registered an upset win to clinch the women’s title. Sujitra won
11-7, 11-2.
Two Sri Lankan pairs met in the mixed doubles
final and experienced pair Thushara Edirisinghe and Chandrika de
Silva won the title over Niluka Karunaratne and Thilini
Jayasinghe. First set was won by Niluka, Thilini combination
15-11. Although they gained an early lead in the second set
Thushara and Chandrika, the top seed pair fought back to win it
15-11. Thushara and Chandrika clinched the deciding set 15-12 to
win the title.
In the men’s doubles final Thushara Edirisinghe
and Duminda Jayakody went down to the top seed pair from
Thailand, Nattapon Naktong and Siwath Koosakumthum 15-5, 15-7.
Women’s doubles final was won by bottom seed
pair of B.R Meenakshi and Trupti Murugande from India beating
Thailand’s top seed pair Monthila Meemak and Soratja Chasrisukot
15-9, 9-15, 15-6.
Eight countries including Sri Lanka took part in
the championship. The Deputy President of the International
Badminton Federation Punch Gunalan was the Chief Guest. Asiain
Badminton Confederation (ABC) Chief Operation Officer Keran Koh
and SLBA President Sumith Guruge and IBF Council Member Eraj
Wijesinghe also graced the occasion.
