Sulochana Ariyadasa of Visakha Vidyalaya entered
the Girls’ Under 19 Singles and Doubles finals at the Junior
National Badminton Championships conducted at the Sri Lanka
Badminton Association headquarters courts at Maitland Place
yesterday. Dinuka Karunarante, the boys’ Under 19 defending
champion also performed well to reach the Double’s final.
Sulochana, the top seed of the event, beat
Uparna Katuwawala 11-8, 11-3 to enter the Under 19 final
scheduled to be played today at the Royal College Sport Complex.
She will meet Lakshi de Silva of Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda
in the final. Lakshi beat Peushani de Silva of Lindsay BMV 11-5,
13-11 in semi finals.
Partnered by Prathibani Bambarandage of Devi BMV,
Sulochana outclassed Imeka Madurawa of Stafford International
and Peushani de Silva 15-4, 15-6 while Anula BMV pair Ravihari
de Silva and Uprana Katuwawala defeated Lakshi de Silva of
Dharmasoka and Kanishka Madushani of Devananda 17-14, 15-3 in
the Girls Under 19 Doubles semi-finals .
Meanwhile, top seed Dinuka Karunarante
celebrated his 18th birthday yesterday in style entering the
Boys Under 19 semi finals and the Doubles final. He had an easy
two set win over Dharmasokian K.G. Jayawardena 15-1, 15-2 in the
Under 19 quarter finals. Then he partnered the Dharmarajan K.G
.K Jayawardena to beat the Thomian pair of Buddima Jayasundara
and Yukthi 15-1, 15-13 in the Doubles semi-finals.
Bottom seed Eranga Fernando of Maliyadeva
Kurunegala also qualified for the Boys Under 19 semi-final
defeating Sameera Sandakelum 15-11, 12-15, 15-12. Eranga
partnered with Lalith Menaka outclassed Tilan Perera and A.
Tillekaratne, the Royal pair 15-13, 15-4 to enter the Doubles
U.L Nayankantha of Ananda and N.K Jayawaedena of
Royal entered the Boys’ Under 17 final.
Meanwhile, based on the performances in the
Under 19 Boys and Girls events, players were selected for the
Mixed Doubles clashes yesterday. Six pairs will battle it out
for the Under 19 Mixed Doubles title today.
