Twenty three million cups of Akbar tea drunk every day

Twenty three million cups of tea brewed from the Akbar and Alghazaleen brands of tea are being drunk every day in various parts of the world, Asgi Akbarally director of Akbar Brothers which won the Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing’s (SLIM) International Brand of the Year award for 2005, said.

"On the basis of two grams of tea per cup, 23 million cups of Akbar and Alghazaleen teas are being consumed daily worldwide,’’ he said.

``This widespread consumer coverage is not only a measure of consumer confidence in our brands, but also serves to project the image of Ceylon tea and the country of its origin – Sri Lanka,’’ Akbarally noted.

"Importantly, this also results in a spin-off benefit for other Sri Lankan products and brands.’’

The International Brand Awards were distributed last week-end at Water’s Edge and Asgi Akbarally received the top award on behalf of his company. Hatim Akbarally received the Brand Champion’s Certificate.

Last year, Akbar Brothers won the International Brand of the Year award for their Alghazaleen brand. With Alghazaleen and Akbar brands commanding market leadership, Akbar Brothers, the country’s biggest tea exporter, is now positioned as Sri Lanka’s largest marketer of branded pure Ceylon tea products.

A company news release said that the Akbar brand is marketed in over 70 countries worldwide and has recorded impressive growth during the last three years.

"Our brand strategy is to maintain and expand the focus of being a premium blend of Ceylon Tea, sought after by customers worldwide for its taste, aroma and liquor,’’ Asgi Akbarally said. "We stay focused on continuous innovations of product lines, packaging and processing.’’

The brand was selected by SLIM through a stringent judging process where the final stage included a verbal presentation of the brand’s success story to the judges and replying questions they posed.

The panel of judges consisted of top marketers of the country and included Mr. Prasanna Perera, Prof. .K.U. Kamalgolda, Messrs Asita Indrajith Abeysekera, Lasantha Abeywickrama, Claude Perera, Stanley Carvlho, Kishu Gomes and Kingsley Bernard.
