Future of Asean and East Asia
The future of East Asia, or for that matter,
Asia, would be in the hands of leaders from 10+3+1+2 – Asean,
China-Japan-South Korea, India, as well as Australia and New
Zealand, when they meet in Kuala Lumpur on Dec 14.
Although the inaugural meeting would be replete
with symbolism and fanfare, it is hard to foresee what the
actual ramifications might be.

Mahinda got Muslim votes, too
An impression is being created that
Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse[MR] was elected by majority Sinhala
Buddhist votes. But a careful analysis reveals that a
substantial number of Muslims and Catholics voted for MR. A
substantial number of Muslims in the east and the south of the
country voted for Mahinda. A careful scrutiny of the results
reveal upto 40% of the Muslims voted for Mahinda notwithstanding
the fact the JHU was with him. A good number of Muslims of the
east voted for Mahinda because they feared if Mr. Ranil
Wickramasinghe was elected he would grant more concessions to
the LTTE and thereby endanger the existence and rights of the
Muslims in the east.

President
Rajapakse questions Jayasuriya’s axing
The coming few weeks could see an amazing turn
around in local cricket administration, after president Mahinda
Rajapakse called for an investigation to find out why former Sri
Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya was left out of the country’s
Test tour to India. Cricket analysts were backing former fast
bowler and ex-chief cricket selector Asanatha de Mel, who was
unceremoniously dumped from the post soon after the interim
committee headed by Jayantha Dharmadasa wrested control of
cricket headquarters, in dramatic fashion using government
force, to take over.
