Mahinda’s Victory was stabilised by estate workers

A survey carried out by The Island in the Plantation Sector in the kelani Valley District and other hill country plantations, workers have voted for Premier Mahinda Rajapakse defying the appeal of the Ceylon Workers Congress and Chandrasekeran. Prior to the Presidential election, it is reliably understood that many members of the CWC and UPWF, have crossed over to Pro UPFA Trade Unions, disappointed over the utterances of the two sectors.

An estate worker who wishes to remain annonymous told the correspondent, that many benefits which they enjoy now was the out-come of former President Chandrika’s and PA and UPFA Governments, constitutioning the Estate Infrastructures Ministry through which several shining proposals were implemented for the benefit of estate workers.

In the Ruwanwella, Yatiyantota, Deraniyagala and Galigamuwa electorates estate workers, it is reliably learnt voted for Premier Mahinda Rajapakse, on an appeal made by Aziz Democratic Workers Congress President Ashruff Aziz, coupled with appeals by Minister Athauda Seniviratne and Deputy Ministers Ranjith Siyambalapitiya and Attorney-at-law H. R. Mitrapala, who are also UPFA MPs for the Kegalle District.

ADWC President Ashruff Aziz told the correspondent that many workers in estates who were members of the pro UNP Trade Unions have rejected these unions and are now joining pro UPFA Plantation Trade Unions, including the ADWC.

Aziz also said, that he was confident of Mr. Rajapakse’s victory from the overwhelming support he received from plantation workers. He said that the future of UPFA is stabilised and no force can topple the Governmet of President Mahinda Rajapakse.
