A fully modernised operating theatre, built at a cost of Rs. 30
million, was declared open at the Karawanella Base Hospital by
Labour and Foreign Employment Minister Athauda Seneviratne
The hospital has also been provide with other facilities such
as an official residence, for the doctors, children’s Ward,
leprosy ward, dental clinic etc. All sections have also been
provided with specialist doctors.
Sabaragamuwa Provincial Health Minister Lalith Dissanayake,
Deputy Minister of Commerce and Trades H. R. Mithrapala,
Provincial minister of Industries and Road Development Y. G.
Padmasiri also participated at the opening.
Minister Athauda Seneviratne said that it was his longtime
dream to develop the Karawanella Hospital. In 1965 when he was
electioneering in this area only Karawanell Hospital was
available to the public. But the hospital lacked doctors and
medicine and the patients had to seek treatment in hospitals
outside the districts. This hospital was neglected. When he
became the chief minister of Sabaragamuwa he was able to develop
the hospital and elevate it to a base hospital. Now with all the
facilities patients need not go to Colombo or Kandy hospitals,
"Even though the World Bank instructed us not to provide free
medical service we did not dance to its tune. We will continue
to provide free medical service and free education. We have
already have started to provide fertiliser at Rs. 350.00.
Financial assistance to children and various measures will be
taken to implement the Mahinda Chintanaya."
The Minister inquired after the health of Y. R. Niluka
Priyadharshani who successfully underwent a cesarean operation
after the opening.
