SB seeks back door return to
Parliament
UNP heavyweight S.B. Dissanayake is seeking to
enter Parliament through the National List. He has discussed
this with UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, informed sources
said.
Political sources said that Dissanayake and his
supporters are of the view this would help the UNP to step up
its campaign against President Mahinda Rajapakse's
administration.

Phone call was robber gang's
undoing
A telephone call received on the mobile phone of
a gangster, during a recent robbery, led to the arrest of four
persons responsible for a series of raids in Colombo and its
suburbs over a period of time. The caller is believed to be a
member of the gang, waiting outside as his colleagues stormed
the targeted residence. |

- Deserters number 70,000,
illegal arms over 35,000
Over 20 underworld gangs on the loose
There are 20 recognized underworld gangs, 70,000
deserters and the interior ministry records 35,000 illegal arms
in the country. The LTTE, paramilitary groups and various other
groups are all unaccounted for and are growing concerns as well,
this was revealed by South Asian Movement Against Small Arms (SAMASA)
Chairman Kingsley Rodrigo yesterday.

The gold award for the most productive school
was won by a school situated in one of the most remote areas.
Panawala Vidyalaya, Emblipitiya in a competition, involving
3,000 schools island-wide, conducted by the Education
Department.

A reply to Eric De Silva
Mr. Eric J De Silva refers to vested interests
and gives two examples namely the denominational school
managements who opposed the expropriation of their property &
school buildings that belonged to them and the Civil Service
Association which opposed the abolition of the Civil Service.
Yes vested interests will oppose what they consider their
rights. The question is whether these changes were in the public
interest or not.

Interesting week in the tea realm
We
reported last week that prices would continue their upward
movement and the future looked bright, at least in the short
run. But that was not to be at this weeks auction. Prices dipped
marginally. Nothing to cause panic, but it did happen. There
were a few platitudes loosely surmised but all opinion centred
on rejuvenation of Kenya after the recent drought. Rains have
returned to tea lands, although arid conditions continued in
most areas in the bush. Tanks had dried. There was no rain
approximately 3 years in those areas the report said.

BOC wants to open three more
branches in India
Bank of Ceylon, which now operates in India with
a single branch in Tamil Nadu state capital Chennai, is planning
to set up three more branches in this country, its Country
Manager Nandasiri said today.
He told the website "newindpress.com" in
Chennai: ‘‘After the Indo-Sri Lankan trade agreement, bilateral
trading activity has moved up to higher levels. In addition, the
proposed Sethusamudram project will further enhance it. We want
to take advantage of this situation by setting up more branches
in India.’’

Wins weightlifting gold
Chinthana Vidanage makes
history
MELBOURNE,
March 17, 2006 (AFP) - Chinthana Vidanage won Sri Lanka's
first ever Commonwealth Games weightlifting gold medal when he
took the 62kg title here on Friday snatching victory with the
final lift of a dramatic competition.
The 24-year-old edged out India's Arun Murugesan
with a huge lift of 153kg taking the gold courtesy of having a
lower body weight after both men had finished on 271kg.
