JVP MP resigns, SLFP go one up

by Harischandra Gunaratna

The number of parliamentary seats held by the JVP was reduced from 39 to 38 with the resignation yesterday of its Gampaha district MP Siripala Amarasinghe due to ill health. Amarasinghe handed over his letter of resignation to the Secretary General of Parliament Priyani Wijesekara.

The vacancy created by Amarasinghe’s resignation will be filled by the SLFP’s Sarath Kumara Gunaratne from Negombo.

Party sources said Amarasinghe was allegedly shot by the police in the neck during the 2004 election and his health deteriorated to great extent making it difficult for him to speak and forcing him to resign his Parliamentary seat.
