The Colombo Fort Magistrate ordered three suspects, including
an insurance agent and a Marriage Registrar to be remanded, when
they were produced in Court in connection with a child marriage.
The Kollupitiya Police told the Court that
The first suspect, an insurance agent, had married a
14-year-old student of a leading government school in the city.
The marriage had been registered by the second accused, the
Registrar for Marriages of Thotamuna in Panadura, named Sri
Jayantha.
The police told Court that the witness to the marriage was
also an employee of the insurance company.
The Magistrate ordered the minor to be produced for a medical
examination.
Investigations were conducted by SI Priyadharshana Perera and
SI Sri Sampath Perera and a team from the Kollupitiya Police
under the directions of ASP Palith S. Siriwardene.
