Work on the Marine Drive and
Duplication Road has come to virtual standstill. It looks like
it will take another ten years for the Marine Drive to be
extended to Kollupitiya and for the Duplication Road to be
extended to Wellawatta. If they can extend Duplication Road up
to W. A. Silva Mawatha in Wellawatta, on a priority basis, it
will greatly ease the congestion on Galle Road.
But now from time to time we hear of grandiose plans by the
authorities of building a link road and other connecting roads
in Colombo. I think the authorities must complete the existing
projects instead of hoodwinking the masses by the news of their
grandiose future road building plans.
Also the stretch of Marine Drive from Ramakrishna Road to
Harmer’ Avenue still remains in darkness without lights being
installed and nobody seems to bothered. I hear there is a
dispute between the RDA and Colombo Municipal over this matter,
and the public continue to suffer.
By the way I stopped writing to the press because no action
was taken on our complaints by the authorities concerned and it
was a wastage of time on our part. During President Premadasa’s
time there was a media unit, whose job was to scrutinise the
daily papers every morning and report to him forthwith. He would
take prompt action on public complaints.
Can anybody tell me whether this unit is still in existence?
