Power and Energy Minister W. D. J. Seneviratne
is confident that he could get the much argued Electricity
Reform (Amendment) Bill, to amend the Electricity Reforms Act
Number 28 of 2002 and the Bill to amend the CEB Act number 17 of
1969, passed in parliament soon, senior official sources said
yesterday.
According to the sources, Seneviratne had
planned to introduce these Bills earlier this month, however,
due to differences in opinion with some trade unions, he delayed
his decision.
However, he is very confident that these Bills
will be passed soon, a spokesman of the Power and Energy
Ministry said.
Meanwhile, Lanka Viduli Sevaka Sangamaya (LVSS)
Secretary H.A. Ranjan Jayalal told The Island yesterday
that they
were aware that Minister Seneviratne is very
adamant about getting these Bills passed.
"But we have our members - the Janatha Vimukthi
Peramumna Parliamentary Group- in the Consultatitive Committee.
So it’s not going to be easy to take decisions opposed to our
views," he added.
Jayalal also said that if any decision is being taken against
their demands, the country will definitely face blackouts island
wide in the near future.
