Hours after it was announced that the Government
and the Tigers had agreed to hold talks in Geneva on June 8, a
soldier was killed in an LTTE attack on an Army foot patrol at
Kalmaduwa, Kovil Puliyankulama in Vavuniya yesterday (29).
The deceased was identified as K. M. W. Bandara.
His body was taken to the Vavuniya Hospital for a post mortem.
He was killed when a group of LTTE cadres
ambushed the foot patrol. The soldiers had returned fire towards
the jungle where the LTTE cadres hiding but it was not known
whether any were killed or injured in the counter attack, police
said.
